Year 10 Awards Ceremony

We also take this opportunity to recognise their successes, both academically and more broadly in their contributions to many aspects of the life and community of Merici College.

Today we gather to celebrate the end of Year 10 and prepare to embark on the next stage in your daughter’s educational journey. We also take this opportunity to recognise their successes, both academically and more broadly in their contributions to many aspects of the life and community of Merici College.

We take this time to thank the parents and carers for their support and commitment. I also thank the teachers for the exceptional learning opportunities and guidance they provide. And to give thanks for each student in this Year 10 cohort.

Giving thanks is such an integral part of life. It is powerful. Saying thank you for small blessing as well as big ones touches your heart and that of others. We need to be grateful for the positive things our family and friends do for us – like cooking a great meal, ironing a uniform, listening to a story, walking with you to the bus stop. However, we also need to give thanks for what seems negative – a red light, a disagreement, when the wifi is down. Seeing a criticism or conflict can be an opportunity to be a better person.

Dr Justin Coulson is a psychologist and one of Australia's most respected and popular parenting authors and speakers. Next year he will be working with students here at Merici and running a staff and parent workshop. About gratitude he says – “gratitude increases wellbeing, improves relationship, foster optimism, and promotes better health. The psychological, emotional, spiritual, social, cognitive and even physical benefits of gratitude have been shown in dozens of studies around the world with people of all ages. When we recognise and express appreciation, we are happier!”  (Relationship Rules, 2018, Ch 34).

I am thankful for you. For who you have become as young women in such a short period of time in what I hope will be a very long life. We are excited about your continued growth as learners and as young women who are beginning to understand the important role you have to play in today’s world. And we look forward to continuing your senior college years with us.

For those moving within the ACT or moving interstate or overseas - we hold a strong belief that the education you have received at Merici and the time you have spent here has put you in good stead for whatever path you have chosen.

Today we presented special awards to some of our Year 10 students and we congratulate:

Jia Li Norris - The Merici All-Rounder Award is awarded to a student who has excelled in most but not necessarily all of the categories academic, co-curricular, personal conduct, leadership service, sport and cultural.

Fleur Evans - Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork award for a student who demonstrates respect, integrity, compassion, teamwork, strength and wisdom.

Heather Bravo - The ACU Spirit of Angela Merici Award is presented by the Australian Catholic University's representative Judith Norris. The award is given to a student who exemplifies the spirit of the College's patron, St Angela Merici.

As part of the celebration today students were presented with their Year 10 certificates, statement of attainment and vocational certificates.

We look forward to seeing you next year. Have a safe and joyous Christmas break, and make wonderful memories with your family and friends. God bless.

Loretta Wholley

Principal
