Seeds of Peace for Ukraine Appeal

The funds raised through this appeal will be used to provide immediate and longer-term humanitarian assistance to communities affected by the conflict in Ukraine, and to displaced Ukrainians in neighbouring countries.

Last week, a woman from Ukraine was choosing seeds to grow in her back garden as she prepared for spring. This week she is searching for seeds of hope as she prepares for homelessness. The voice of our collective hearts at Merici College cry out the injustice in Ukraine as we pray for peace and the end to the senseless malicious hostility. We assert our solidarity in faith with our global sisters.

Our girls have been stirred by their heartbreak, angered by the violence, transformed by the senselessness. The peace we pray for is not just for the absence of war; it is for restoring the wholeness of the web of life, to realise the sacredness of our connectedness, to respect the responsibility of that union and the dignity of each person within this web of life.

To show our solidarity with our global sisters, we are asking each girl to purchase a prayer card for $5.00 (cash only). The girls will write their name and a personal message of solidarity on the card. These cards will be ‘sown’ into the gardens at Merici College; sowing seeds of love, peace and faith, in the hope that the people of Ukraine will receive some sustenance to recover from their physical, emotional and spiritual wounds. The girls are welcome to buy more than one card and the proceeds will be sent to Caritas Ukraine.

The girls may purchase the prayer cards from the Finance Office on Wednesday 2 March which is Ash Wednesday. A stall will also be set up in the New Quad at recess and lunch time for the girls to buy their prayer cards, sign the back and leave with us for the “planting” in the front garden on Thursday 3 March in the morning.

The girls are invited to take their prayer card home at the end of the day, as a reminder of their spiritual connection with their global family.
