Human Biology students explore the nature of stem cells

This year, students at Merici have had their first chance to explore Human Biology as a subject for Senior study. Unit 1, ‘The Essentials of Human Life’ explores the nature of stem cells, in both embryonic and adult contexts, and challenges students to apply this knowledge to the emerging field of tissue engineering. Last week, our Merici girls were challenged by graduate students from the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science to transfer their knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of various tissue types to the field of prosthetics.

Aerospace Engineering - Imogene Blake investigates the Hubble Space Telescope

Our Yr 10 Engineering students began their aerospace engineering course this year looking at the history of human space flight and exploration.  As part of this topic each student undertook research on a space mission of their choice, and produced a popular science-style article about that mission.

This week, Imogene Blake writes about the Hubble Space Telescope.

Green Tip #11 World Bee Day!

This Sunday (May 20th) is the first ever World Bee Day!

In Canberra, there’ll be activities on all day  (and some on Saturday too!).The official opening of World Bee Day kicks off at the Slovenian Embassy on Sunday morning. Parliament House will serve afternoon tea using honey from the Parliamentary bees, and later on the Swiss Embassy and the ANU are partnering to host a free screening of “More than Honey” at Coombs Theatre on ANU campus.

Mother's Day Prayer and Breakfast

On the morning of Monday 14 May, our College was honoured by the presence of more than 140 mothers, grandmothers and significant others from our Merici family. The focus of the Prayer was centred around the St Angela Merici Rose which was gifted Merici College this year and is our 2018 Year of Youth symbol, representing the ongoing nurturing that mothers provide to their children every day. Students wrote messages of thanks, appreciation and love to their mums and significant others; recognising the important role they play in their lives.
