Human Biology students explore the nature of stem cells

Students were challenged to transfer their knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of various tissue types to the field of prosthetics.

This year, students at Merici have had their first chance to explore Human Biology as a subject for Senior study. Unit 1, ‘The Essentials of Human Life’ explores the nature of stem cells, in both embryonic and adult contexts, and challenges students to apply this knowledge to the emerging field of tissue engineering. Last week, our Merici girls were challenged by graduate students from the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science to transfer their knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of various tissue types to the field of prosthetics. Would you be able to build a ‘below knee’ prothesis from just a small number of household items? To see how our girls went, check out the images. Videos will be downloaded soon.
