Bastille Day Celebrations

Today we celebrated Bastille Day with students reflecting on the importance of the day in Pastoral Care classes. We were treated to a wonderful French menu in our Canteen with delicious crème puffs and crepes served, together with other French delicacies. Hands were clapping and feet were tapping with our Dance Troupe performing for our community during lunch time, with the all-time favourite, the Can-Can, the highlight of their performance.

Merici College Green Tip #21 - We have heaps of water, right?

So there has been some rain, the fires are out, it’s green, we must have plenty of water in the dams right?

Actually the combined dam levels today are 55.99% currently (ICON water).

Readers from last year’s Greentips may recall that in July last year the combined dam levels were….55% (ICON water).

Year 10 Transitions Forum and Reflection Day

During the week, Year 10 students at Merici College participated in the 2020 Transitions Forum. The Forum is held every year and is dedicated to Year 10 students moving into their final years of education, providing them with an opportunity to consider their course choices for Years 11 and 12 and to think about career pathways.

The students considered how to make decisions, reflected on what is important in their lives, tried out a few different careers, learnt about the job market, prepared for senior study and much, much more.

The Plastic Free Foundation provide resources and ideas to help reduce single-use plastic waste everyday at home, work, school, and even at your local cafe.

What will you choose to refuse?

Merici College Green Tip #20 - Merici Awarded 5-Star Accreditation

Last week Merici College was awarded by the ACT government through the Actsmart Schools Program with 5-star accreditation.

This means that we have achieved accreditation in the areas of waste, energy, water, biodiversity, and links to the curriculum.

Merici is the first high school or Year 7-12 school in the ACT to earn this honour.

Merici is also the current ACT Sustainable School of the Year.

Merici College Green Tip #19 - Plastic Waste at Merici

Using an online calculator, the students in Ms Heydenrych's Year 9 Science class worked out that they each generate an average of 7.29kgs of plastic waste per year at school (just from food products).

They then worked out how much this would be if extended to include all the students and staff. i.e approx 800.

This works out to 5.8 tonnes per year of plastic on Merici's campus and doesn't include large items, clothing etc.

The students concluded that our plastic use is the challenge of our lifetimes.
