Last Friday, a litter audit was undertaken in collaboration with the ACT government Sustainable Schools Program as our activity for World Environment Day.

Wednesday, June 5th is World Environment Day. The 2025 focus is on plastic pollution.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving Reconciliation in Australia.

May 22nd is International Day of Biodiversity. Biodiversity is the living fabric of our planet. It underpins human wellbeing - health, food supply and the economy. 

Laminate will take up space in landfill for hundreds of years, leaching petrochemicals and other harmful chemicals into the water and soil.

Sunday 4 May to Saturday 10 May is International Compost Week.  Approximately 50% of the rubbish Australians put in the red landfill bin could be put to better use in the garden as compost and mulch.

As it gets cooler, there is a precedent for heaters at school being turned up as high as they can go, and even left on overnight as high as 27 degrees.

At the ACT Schools Climate Conference last week we learned that Canberrans generate ONE MILLION TONNES OF WASTE PER YEAR.

Please remember to recycle at school and put your food scraps in the containers in the canteen to go out to our Global Worming wormfarm.

Recently, I read a fascinating article on the ABC News app in relation to the development of language. Essentially, the article posited that language is forever changing and that currently, the greatest single driver of this change is in fact young women and girls.

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions.

SAM students (Sustainability at Merici) will be "switching off" for Earth Hour at recess and planting 40 understorey flowering plants from the local ecosystem (Yellow Box-Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland) at lunchtime on Friday 21 March to honour these two events.
