Year 10 students at Merici College participated in a week-long Transitions Forum from Monday 26 July to Friday 30 July 2017. The Forum is held every year and is dedicated to Year 10 students moving into their final years of education, providing them with an opportunity to consider their course choices for Years 11 and 12 and to think about career pathways.
During the week students considered how to make decisions, reflected on what is important in their lives, tried out a few different careers, learnt about the job market, prepared for senior study and much, much more.
We congratulate Shirahni Mudaliar, Year 12 student and Expressive Arts Captain, on her music achievements with the Canberra Youth Orchestra.
Year 7 students experienced Mind Blank’s ‘Forum Theatre’ style performance on ‘’Cyberbullying’’ today.
Sadly we remember Maria Bernice O’Sullivan who died suddenly on Sunday 25 June 2017, aged 89.
Bernice joined the staff of Braddon Catholic Girls’ High School (the original name of the College) in 1961 as an Art, History and Literature teacher. She retired at the end of 1992.
Canberra’s cold temperatures did not favour Merici College Year 10, 11 and 12 students and teachers who rose to the challenge on Thursday 22 June for the annual Student Representative Council (SRC) Vinnies Sleepout.
The group slept outdoors in the New Quad to raise funds for Canberra’s homeless. With the temperature a low of -3 degrees, students and teachers prepared themselves for a cold night out. The aim of the night was to promote awareness within our Merici community of the issue of homelessness and for the students to experience a small part of the reality of homelessness.
Congratulations to Anna Connolly, Year 7 on her success over the weekend, having participated in Regional Special Olympics Basketball Competition at the Australian Institute of Sport winning medals in Skills (2nd in division) and 1st team in division. We wish Anna continued success in all her future endeavours.
Perspectives on a co-educational school, that wasn’t really co-educational
It is hard to believe that 39 years ago I came to Braddon as one of 49 intrepid boys who would form the initial intake of males to the school community.
What struck me as incredible at the time, was the sheer size of the Year 12 girls; they all seemed like Giant Amazonian Women to us scrawny 12-year-old boys, almost scary!
