Year 10 students at Merici College participated in a week-long Transitions Forum from Monday 26 July to Friday 30 July 2017. The Forum is held every year and is dedicated to Year 10 students moving into their final years of education, providing them with an opportunity to consider their course choices for Years 11 and 12 and to think about career pathways.
During the week students considered how to make decisions, reflected on what is important in their lives, tried out a few different careers, learnt about the job market, prepared for senior study and much, much more.
Each day of the week was dedicated to a different aspect of the students’ learning. The days were Monday – Day of Hope, Tuesday – Careers and Vocational Day, Wednesday – Academic Skills Day, Thursday – Careers Day Out and About, and Friday – Reflection Day
Throughout the week students participated in workshops which were facilitated by experts working in different industries. Workshops were held which provided students first-hand experience and advice on careers in Design, Fitness and Sport, Hair and Beauty industries, Media, working with children, Science, Trades/Project Management, Business, Politics and Government, Defence Force, Volunteering/GAP Year, Allied Health, Police, Nursing and Law.
On Thursday, 29 July it was “out and about” for student educational visits to the Australian National University (ANU), the University of Canberra, the Canberra Institute of Technology and the Magistrates Court. Students were able to collect information and ask questions about different professions and courses available to them after graduating from Year 12.
The Transitions Forum was extremely successful and feedback received from all the students has been very positive. Students found all the information sessions and workshops very helpful and informative and noted that they feel more confident about the transition into Year 11 and more informed on the choices available to them for their future career paths.
