Sports Awards 2017

The annual Merici College Sports Awards presentation night was held on Thursday 2 November. Throughout 2017 many of our students have taken up sporting opportunities offered at Merici.  Merici competes in up to 50 interschool events throughout the year with students displaying their talents in several of these of sports. We also have several co-curricular sporting teams, Netball, Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey, Futsal and Snow Sports that compete in ACT and NSW weekend competitions.

Merici's Sustainability Captain receives the ACT Senior School Student Sustainability Award

On Friday 27 October, Merici Sustainability Captain Julia Heather was named as the winner of the ACT Senior School Student Sustainability Award. The award was part of the Conservation Council’s annual Environment Awards, and recognises ‘an individual who is an ACT high school or college student living in Canberra or our region who has made an outstanding contribution to sustainability initiatives and protecting our environment in the past 12 months’. Year 10 student Caitlin Treble was also a finalist for the award.

Debating Success at Grand Finals

It is with absolute pleasure and delight that we announce that our Year 10 debating team of Rosemary Zielinski, Ella Carmichael and Caitlin Bilton WON their grand final against Gold Creek last night.

They successfully argued 'that we will require a licence for parents to have children'.

Merici has never won this competition before, so the girls have achieved a huge result for themselves and the school.

Debating Team through to the Finals

We congratulate our two Year 10 Debating teams (Kaitlin McClory, Issy Mahon Matisse Van, Rosie Zielinski, Ella Carmichael, Caitlin Bilton) who debated against each other in the ACT Debating Competition semi-finals. They argued the topic 'That there should be a quota of low SES students attending private schools'.

We are proud to announce that the team comprising Rosie Zielinksi, Ella Carmichael and Caitlin Bilton are through to the grand final next Wednesday, 25 October where they will debate against Gold Creek.

Shabnam Mohamad Shafiq - 2017 Pens Against Poverty Writing Competition -

Congratulations Shabnam Mohamad Shafiq on being selected for an award in the  2017 Pens Against Poverty writing competition.  Merici College was also the overall school winner and teacher Mrs Louise Martingale and her Year 10 class are being recognised as the standout class. The awards ceremony will be held on Friday 20 October at the Canberra College Performing Arts Centre.

Monique Lawrence awarded ACT Intermediate Ice-Skating Champion

Monique Lawrence, Year 10 student, competed at the ACT State Ice Skating Championships on Saturday, 14 October and attained a Personal Best score and 1st place!  Monique has been selected into the ACT Representative team to go to Brisbane in December 2017. Also then competing on Sunday, 25 October in Liverpool NSW taking out another 1st place. We congratulate Monique on these wonderful achievements and look forward to hearing more news.

Jessica Lauc, winner of the CPA National Business Plan Competition and designer of the "LEADZ" dog band

We congratulate Jessica Lauc, Year 12 student, on winning the National CPA Business Plan Competition in Melbourne. Jessica presented her business plan on the "LEADZ" band, to a panel of judges including the Director of CPA Australia and the National Coordinator of Business Educators. The "LEADZ" band is a very innovative design of a dog band that contains two compartments: one for dog treats; and the other for tidy bags or any other small items such as car keys, on either side of the band. Jessica was inspired to design the band by her family dog, Archie Lauc!

Commissioning Liturgy of our 2018 College Leaders

Congratulations to our 2018 College Leaders who were commissioned into their new roles by all members of the College.

A special liturgy was held on Monday 16 October where the College Captain and Vice Captain, House Captain and Vice Captains, Specialist Captains, the Narragunnawali Captain and the Transition Captain were officially recognised in their leadership roles for 2018. 

International Day of the Girl ABC Radio Canberra Interview

International Day of the Girl is an international observance day declared by the United Nations and is held on 11 October each year. The observation supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender. This inequality includes areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence against women and unfree child marriage.
