Merici Green Tip #25 - How to make your household sponge better for your wallet and the environment...

It was recently pointed out to me that what I do at home is not common practice and that it would be beneficial to share this knowledge to increase the environmental savings. So, I wash my household sponges in the dishwasher at the end of the day along with the days dishes.

Tips, tricks, life hacks... whatever you want to call them, they will reduce your environmental impact and save you money by keeping your household items working better for longer.

Welcome to the Merici 2020 Grandparent's Day Reflection. This year has certainly come with its challenges, both for our school community and for the world. Normally we would celebrate together with our grandparents beginning with a liturgy, followed by a lovely morning tea here at school, but because our grandparents are unable to come in and celebrate with us today, we have a special video message for you instead.

2020 Year 12 Retreat

Our 2020 Year 12 Retreat was held on Monday 27 July and Tuesday 28 July. The theme for the Retreat was “Dare to Dream”, our Christian Service theme for Year 12 was Love and our 2020 College theme is Building Futures.

Our 2020 Year 12 Retreat was held on Monday 27 July and Tuesday 28 July. The theme for the Retreat was “Dare to Dream”, our Christian Service theme for Yr 12 was Love and our 2020 College theme is Building Futures. Year 12 students reflected on their journey at Merici College and as senior leaders of the College, how they would continue to be leaders with hope and faithfulness – both for themselves and others, what it means to Dare to Dream, where have they have been, where are they are now, where are they are going?

Bastille Day Celebrations

Today we celebrated Bastille Day with students reflecting on the importance of the day in Pastoral Care classes. We were treated to a wonderful French menu in our Canteen with delicious crème puffs and crepes served, together with other French delicacies. Hands were clapping and feet were tapping with our Dance Troupe performing for our community during lunch time, with the all-time favourite, the Can-Can, the highlight of their performance.

Reflecting on the IB Statement of Inquiry

With the conclusion of a unit comes the opportunity for students and teachers alike to reflect on the statement of inquiry. The statement of inquiry is a statement which is made up of a key concept, one or more related concepts and a global context. This is compiled by the teacher into a meaningful statement which students can understand.

This week as our Year 10 students prepare for their 2020 Transitions Forum, our #MericiMoment takes a look back at forums held in the past. Forums are held every year and are dedicated to Year 10 students moving into their final years of education, providing them with an opportunity to consider their course choices for Years 11 and 12 and to think about career pathways.

Merici College Green Tip #19 - Plastic Waste at Merici

Using an online calculator, the students in Ms Heydenrych's Year 9 Science class worked out that they each generate an average of 7.29kgs of plastic waste per year at school (just from food products).

They then worked out how much this would be if extended to include all the students and staff. i.e approx 800.

This works out to 5.8 tonnes per year of plastic on Merici's campus and doesn't include large items, clothing etc.

The students concluded that our plastic use is the challenge of our lifetimes.
