Merici College Community BBQ

We would like to thank our Merici community for coming along to our Community BBQ on Thursday 21 March. The BBQ was a great opportunity for our whole community to gather, parents to meet PC Teachers and for us to welcome new families to the College. Our six individual Houses were vibrant in their presence with House Coordinators, Pastoral Care Teachers and Captains meeting and greeting new families and welcoming them to our Merici family.

Student Achievement - Caitlyn Crick awarded Simpson Prize ACT Runner-Up

We congratulate Caitlyn Crick (Year 10 Balgo) who has received the ACT runner-up award for the 2019 Simpson Prize essay competition, for her essay about the end of the First World War. A wonderful achievement in a national competition!

Caitlyn enjoyed a weekend of touring Canberra’s historic sights and museums with other prize winners from around the country, and received her award on Monday 18 March.

International Exchange Program - Student Reflections

Ella Rowe (Host) and Cynthia Zhang (Exchange Student) share their experiences about their recent participation in the exchange program.

Cynthia Zhang (Exchange Student)

On 4th February, the ten-days travel in Melbourne is over. It also means the days at Merici College and the life with Ellen’s family has started. Before I went to Australia, I already kept in contact with Ellen on email for a long time, but it’s the first time I met her father, mother and her sister Alice. They are all very kind and funny!

Merici Green Tip #7 - National Ride or Walk to School Day

This Friday, 22 March is National Ride to School Day.

Where possible please consider riding or walking to school. To our families, please consider riding or walking to work or wherever you may be going. Walking or riding part of the way is also a good compromise!

While you are riding or walking to work or school take a few moments to consider how you might apply this on other days. Choose to ride or walk short trips, such as to your local shops, wherever possible.

Student Achievement - Brooke Ellis

We are very proud to say that our wonderful Year 8 student, Brooke Ellis competed at the 2019 ENSW State Interschools Championships, held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC).

On Sunday 10  March,  Brooke and TS Sir Donn (Donny) competed in the Secondary Elementary (Years 7-12) Dressage Championship, placing 3rd in their first test (3B) and 1st in their second test (3C), giving them enough points to be sashed overall Elementary Champions.

100% hOPE ...Giving children a future and a hope!

The 100% Hope Choir’s performance at Merici College was inspirational. The enthusiasm of the audience was as infectious as the passion and energy of the 9 Ugandan students who danced, drummed and sang their way into the hearts of our students. The message of Hope was subtle, no preaching, just story telling. We feel privileged to have had the honour of hosting the choir and will certainly do it again. Our only regret is that the whole school was not able to see it.

Merici celebrates Maths Pi Day

Thank you to St Thomas More's Primary and Rosary Primary who joined in our Pi Day celebrations on Friday 15 March. Over the past two days we have enjoyed exploring the number Pi and other areas of mathematics through a range of hands on, individual and group activities. Students rotated around stations for a 45-minute session run by Mathematics staff and students.

Our Challenge, Our Hope

Dear Merici College Community

Like many Catholics, over the past years and weeks, I have struggled to express my feelings, thoughts and reactions to the abuse of power, privilege and position by members of the Catholic Church, including Pell’s guilty verdict.

I personally, have found it difficult to comprehend how such horrendous crimes have occurred. My prayer life has also been put to test, yet I believe that these challenges can only be eased by praying with an open and trusting heart.
