This year has been one of exciting developments and transitions within the Mathematics Department. At the end of Semester 2, Dr. Ed Mickleburgh stepped down from his role as Maths Coordinator. We are incredibly grateful for his leadership and contributions over the years, and we’re fortunate to continue benefiting from his expertise in the classroom and through enrichment programs. We were also excited to welcome three new Mathematics teachers this year: Ms. Tanisha Elliot, Mrs. Marlena Nitsche, and Mr. Andrew Diessel. All three are highly experienced and passionate educators, and they have been wonderful additions to our team.
Dr. Ed Mickleburgh has continued to run Maths Enrichment on Friday afternoons, with more students than ever attending. Each week, students come together to collaboratively solve puzzles and tackle challenging mathematical problems, sharing in their passion for Mathematics. The increasing interest in Mathematics is also evident in the large number of participants in the Australian Mathematics Competition. This year, we had 58 students volunteer to participate in this competition with several outstanding results. We congratulate all students who received a Distinction Award including Thirukkural Sivaprakasam (Year 7), Amaani Singh (Year 8), Angelique Fittler-Van Tilburg (Year 8), Isabella Clark (Year 8), Therese Brooker (Year 9), Leah Shoebridge (Year 10), Sara Venkat (Year 10), Saanvi Sharma (Year 10), Krithika Bumia (Year 10), Amelia Miller (Year 11) Aurelia Evans (Year 11) and Abbey Alexander (Year 12).
In Term 3 of this year, all Year 7 students participated in a series of hands-on, problem-solving challenges hosted by World of Maths. These engaging activities provided a valuable opportunity for students to collaborate, think creatively, and build confidence in their mathematical skills. We also had two teams of Year 10 students attend the 2025 Year 10 Maths Day at Burgmann Anglican School. During the event, students engaged in a series of mathematical challenges designed to foster teamwork, interschool spirit, and a shared love of Mathematics.
We’ve also made significant progress in developing a low-variance curriculum for Year 7 Mathematics. All Year 7 classes now use shared, evidence-based resources that embed high-impact teaching practices, ensuring consistency and quality across the cohort. To support student learning, we’ve implemented fortnightly quizzes to monitor progress and identify key skills for targeted reteaching during daily review. We’re excited to continue refining the Year 7 curriculum in 2026 and begin developing a low-variance curriculum for Year 8.
2025 also marked the launch of our Numeracy Intervention Program, Corrective Mathematics. Ms. Emma Bishop initiated the program in Semester 1, and Mrs. Milanda Roxas has taken over as Numeracy Facilitator in Semester 2. We look forward to seeing this program continue to grow and make a positive impact in 2026.
