Today, our Year 10 students were privileged to welcome Merici alumna and ACT Australian of the Year, Dr Rose McGready, along with fellow Merici alumna Helen Shephard. (Class of 1981)
Rose shared her remarkable journey from Merici student to internationally recognised doctor, researcher and humanitarian, dedicating more than 30 years to improving healthcare for women and children along the Thailand–Myanmar border.
In recognition of her extraordinary contribution to global healthcare and humanitarian service, Rose was named ACT Australian of the Year, a prestigious honour that reflects not only her outstanding professional achievements, but also her commitment to justice, compassion and service to others.
Helen shared her own journey since graduating from Merici, including a distinguished career spanning more than 25 years in corporate governance and human resources. As a Founding Director of the Dr Rose McGready Foundation, Helen spoke about the importance of using professional skills and leadership experience in service of others, helping to raise awareness and vital funding to support Rose’s life-saving work.
Together, Rose and Helen demonstrated the many ways a Merici education can inspire lives of purpose, leadership and service. Their stories encouraged students to consider how their own gifts, talents and values can be used to make a positive difference in the world.
