Please read the full Destinations Report attached below. This report is focussed on the Year 12 Graduating Class of 2024. The data was obtained from a Destinations Survey sent out to all students in December – mid January, after the January round of offers for university placement.

The student survey related to:

  • Plans for 2025 – categorised into: further study, full time employment and a Gap year
  • Plans for 2026- if they were taking a Gap year
  • Type of study
  • Institution of study

Of the young women who completed Year 12 at Merici College in 2024, 90% will continue in some form of recognised education and training in the year after they have left school or after they have taken a Gap year. While the percentage of students taking a Gap year has increased significantly, the overall percentage of students studying at some stage in 2025 or 2026 has also increased.

Approximately 68% will go directly into further study at university (combination of university, CIT or a private provider), while 22% have decided to take a GAP year. This is up from last year, when 12% took a Gap year.

Ten percent have moved into full time employment or are looking for employment, mainly in the Public Service and Defence.

Students choosing to study interstate has increased by 16% from 2024 to approximately 34% in 2025/26. Those students have chosen to study at the University of Wollongong, University of New South Wales, University of Newcastle, University of Sydney, RMIT, Monash University, Wollongong Tafe, University of Queensland, University of Notre Dame (WA), Charles Sturt University and the Australian Film Television and Radio School. One student is studying internationally at Nipissing University in Canada.

The percentage of students studying at Australian National University and Canberra University has remained relatively stable, at 20% and 39% respectively. There has been a decrease in enrolment at other Canberra institutions, such as the Australian Catholic University, which is down 5% and Canberra Institute of Technology, down 13% on last year’s figures.
