Ash Wednesday invites us to pause and reflect

As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to God and to others.

Today as a school community we celebrate Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday invites us to pause and reflect. It marks the beginning of Lent, a season to turn our hearts back to God and renew our lives through love, service, and sacrifice.

Ashes are left behind after a fire, symbolising loss and darkness, a world gone cold. This is where we start our Lenten journey towards the light and warmth of Easter. When we receive the ashes on our foreheads, we are reminded that life is fragile and that we are always invited to grow, to change, and to return to what really matters.

Lent gives us space to slow down, to reflect honestly on our lives, and to ask ourselves: What needs to change? What can I let go of? Where is God calling me to grow?

The Church gives us three simple yet powerful ways to live Lent:
Prayer: connecting with God through listening and speaking.
Fasting: letting go of distractions or comforts to focus on what truly matters.
Almsgiving: sharing what we have with those in need.

As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to God and to others. Let this be a time of reflection and renewal as we walk with Jesus towards Easter. Together, through our actions and compassion, may we Unite Against Poverty and bring hope to those in need.

As members of the Merici College community we commit to raise money for Caritas Project Compassion and offer hope to the millions of families who fight for justice, peace and survival every single day.  It is an ongoing demonstration of the faith, love and generosity of our Catholic congregation, all in the name of justice and peace.
