Today we welcomed our community for our special gathering, an opportunity for us to reflect on 2024 and prepare ourselves for the Season of Advent which will begin next Sunday.
Our College theme this year is “SPES,” which symbolizes hope, resilience, and faith, lighting our way forward together.
Angela Merici was:
- a woman of deep faith,
- a visionary leader,
- a source of hope, and
- a true servant of others.
Her life and mission exemplify the essence of SPES, reminding us of the power of hope in building a better world, even in challenging times. Today, she continues to inspire us at Merici College as we strive to embody these values.
In this special Mass, we reflected on the Gospel’s enduring message of hope. Despite the prophecy of tribulation and upheaval, Jesus assures His disciples that after the trials, they will see “the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.” This promise reminds us that even in the darkest times, we can stand firm, for our liberation is near at hand.
As we began our celebration, our Opening Procession was led by Year 7 and Year 10 students representing our six Houses. These student representatives bought forward their House candles and key Advent symbols, each with a special meaning for this season of hope and preparation.
The House candles represent the unity of our Merici community, with each House sharing its unique light.
The wreath symbolizes eternal life and the continuous cycle of our faith journey.
The angel brings a message of hope, just as it announced the Good News of Christ’s birth. The purple candle calls us to prepare, reflect, and wait during Advent.
The star reminds us of our path toward Jesus, the Light of the World, while the manger reflects humility and the simplicity of Christ’s coming.
Finally, the gold crown signifies Christ as the King of Kings, who brings peace and justice to all.
At the conclusion of the Mass, students celebrated their achievements in their Christian Service Learning Program, receiving their Blue, Red and Gold Wings. We congratulate the students on their commitment and contribution made to our community.
