Student Achievement

Congratulations to a debating team from Merici who has won the gold medal of the Middle School Ethics Olympiad. The Ethics Olympiad is a competition that involves debating skills, critical thinking and creativity, with teams from various high schools across the ACT. Students form a panel to debate “ethical issues” ranging from privacy and technology to the environment, charity and friendship.

Our 2019 Showcase is a celebration of the artistic gifts and talents of all our students. The subjects highlighted in the exhibition are Dance, Photography, Visual Arts, Media, Music, Vocal and Drama. The ‘Arts’ consists of visual and performing arts and the students presented a very professional and entertaining program. The Merici College Dance Troupe performed wonderful routines that showcase their diversity. The Vocal Group were outstanding as they performed vocal pieces. And the talents of our bands and ensembles has been outstanding this year.

Congratulations Merici College students and staff, 2019 ACT Smart Sustainable School of the Year! Fiona Buining, Sustainability Teacher, also received a Highly Commended for the Staff Leadership Award. We were also nominated for the Sustainable Project Award for the Tomato Sale.

A FAREWELL MESSAGE TO OUR YEAR 12S

To the Graduating Class of 2019, on behalf of your teachers, staff and students of Merici College….congratulations! We would like to thank two wonderful young women who have led the College. Thank you Malia Harrison and Olivia Miles for your enthusiasm for life and vision for the future. You have been great ambassadors. Well done and congratulations. Thank you also to our 2019 Captains. We have valued your generous spirit and the gusto you have instilled in your teams and Houses.

It is with the utmost privilege that Olivia and I conclude our time here at Merici as College Captains as we stand here representing the Graduating Class of 2019. Graduation marks both an ending and a beginning. It is warm memories of the past but also the big dreams of the future.

Merici College has attained the fifth of 5 stars in the Sustainability Accreditation Program run by the ACT Government through its Actsmart Schools Program.  Pending review in all 5 categories - Waste, Energy, Water, Biodiversity and Links to the Curriculum - we will soon be the first high school and Year 7-12 school in the ACT to be 5 star accredited.  This is a significant achievement and the result of work over the last eight years by key staff and students that has built the momentum necessary for this outstanding result. Our Sustainability at Merici (SAM) team have packed up our old school uniforms and they are ready to be shipped to Mercy Aid Australia Ltd who will distribute items to needy communities in Somalia.
