Merici College Green Tip #8 - While we are at home more than usual, we can reduce our food waste.....

It's a staggering figure, but about one-third of all food produced for human consumption around the world goes to waste.

Below are some tips from the World Wide Fund for Nature on why reducing food waste matters and how you can improve your food management to save your hard earned dollars and reduce your environmental impact

Merici College Green Tip #5 - Not all chocolate is the same!

When thinking of Easter eggs, there are some that are better than others...

Around 70% of the chocolate we consume comes from West Africa, where it's estimated that more than two million children and young people under the age of 18 work as labourers in cocoa harvesting. Some of these children are trafficked; many are working under harmful labour conditions. And it's the cocoa they produce that ends up in the chocolate we eat.

Be part of the solution and look for chocolate that is certified by the Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade or UTZ.

Merici College Green Tip #3 - Oceans, Sea Life and Plastics

Following on from Merici College being awarded the ACT Sustainable School of the Year, I was asked to launch a children's book on the weekend.

This week's tip is based on the information I presented at the launch on ocean's, sea life and plastics.  I was also asked to speak about what we are doing here at Merici and the room erupted into applause at the conclusion.  People spoke to me afterwards and are impressed with what we do here!

Merici College Green Tip #1 - A summer of climate change impacts and Sustainability at Merici in 2020

After a summer of fire and smoke many times the maximum hazardous level, loss of life and property and the catastrophic impact on so much of our precious wildlife, many are experiencing anxiety and concern for the future.

I am among you. So are my children. Also Greta Thunberg and Australian economist Steve Keen (see attached article).

Year 7-10 Advent Mass

Our community celebrated Advent on Thursday 5 December with a very special Mass. We were very honoured to welcome our Celebrant, Fr Emil Milat from the Central Canberra parishes and Sr Genny Ryan, one of our Ursuline Sisters whose Order is instrumental to the foundation of Merici and who continue to inspire us today.

College Captains’ Farewell Address to the Community

It is with the utmost privilege that Olivia and I stand before you today to congratulate and farewell the graduating class of 2019. Graduation marks both an ending and a beginning. It is the warm memories of the past but also the big dreams of the future. To our sisters, words can’t describe how proud we are of what you have achieved not only individually, but also as a cohort. As you graduate, don’t forget to thank those who helped you get here. Your teachers, peers, parents, google, Wikipedia, coffee, and copy and paste.
