May 8, 2025 | 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM at Merici College
Canberra-raised Prof. Rose McGready left Australia more than 30 years ago armed simply with a passion to help women and children in need.
Now you can hear the inspiring story of how and why this doctor left a comfortable life in Australia to volunteer to help people she didn’t know along the border between Thailand and Myanmar – a part of the world she knew little about. She was drawn to help women and children who through no fault of their own, were dying of malaria and other conditions.
Prof. McGready will be speaking at the Merici College, where she completed her high school education, about her life-saving work.
For decades, Prof. McGready has worked tirelessly to enhance the health and well-being of mothers and babies from marginalised communities. More recently, she has been helped only by a band of volunteers and donations from supporters.
Not only does she and her team focus on maternal health, but they also train health workers on site. Her team’s research portfolio is broad and includes conducting life-saving studies into the effects of malaria during pregnancy and other relevant problems.
Prof. McGready and her team’s research and treatment of malaria in pregnant women has been so successful that it is now promoted by the World Health Organisation.
So, what makes a woman leave a comfortable life in Australia’s capital city to help people she’s never met in one of the most dangerous areas in the region? Passion? A calling? Because she can? If you’re Prof. Rose McGready, it’s all of the above.
Professor Rose McGready will be in conversation with Virginia Haussegger AM at Merici College Canberra on 8 May 2025, 5.30pm-7.30 pm.
