This week is International Compost Awareness Week!
Did you know that as Australians, almost 50% of the waste we put in our landfill bins is compostable? You can rescue your food waste by starting a composting system at home or in the workplace. Composting is a great tool for gardeners and waste-haters alike!
START YOUR OWN COMPOST
If you’re interested in starting your own composting system, you can head to http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s4439784.htm for some tips for beginners.
START YOUR OWN WORM FARM
If you don’t have room for a big compost heap, starting a worm farm can be a space-saving solution for organics recycling. There’s an easy guide available here: http://www.foodwise.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Worms-ONLINE-1.pdf and an introduction from Costa here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3hWIZsm4z0.
LINK UP WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS
New app and NFP start-up ‘ShareWaste’ is pairing up people who want to compost their kitchen scraps with their neighbours that are already composting. Everybody wins and it’s all completely free! Head to their website https://sharewaste.com/ to register your compost or find a composting neighbour near you.
GET HELP FROM A COMPANY WHO’LL DO IT FOR YOU
Alternatively, take a look at Able Organic Recycling (http://ableorganic.com.au), a company that will install compost bins in your workplace, retrieve them once full, and turn your ‘waste’ into compost.
AT MERICI
At Merici, food waste can be disposed of in the food scraps buckets in the canteen, which are emptied daily into the Kitchen Garden composting system. Staff members can use the compost bin in the main staffroom for their peels and scraps.
