Exemplifying the positive and far-reaching role that faith organizations can play in the global effort to lower emissions, the Pope has called for the de-carbonization of the global economy and urges investment in clean and renewable energy to protect the world’s oceans and ecological systems for “the common good of the entire human family.”
A more sustainable “circular economy” is also promoted to reduce exploitation of people and natural resources. This includes the reform of government subsidies to fossil fuels, a tax on carbon and other forms pollution, divestment from oil, coal, and gas and the redirection of investments into life-affirming, renewable forms of energy.
