Merici College Green Tip #7 – International Day of Forests and Earth Hour this week

Sustainability at Merici

Some big events this week!

SAM students (Sustainability at Merici) will be “switching off” for Earth Hour at recess and planting 40 understorey flowering plants from the local ecosystem (Yellow Box-Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland) at lunchtime on Friday 21st of March to honour these two events.

Please “switch off” as you leave your rooms at recess this Friday, 21 March.

International Day of Forests

A cue to plant…

Red Hill, ACT.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.

Earth Hour

At home, you can switch off your non-essential lights on Saturday 22 March for one hour between 830pm and 930pm.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The event is held annually, encouraging the individuals, communities, and businesses to give an hour for Earth, and additionally marked by landmarks and businesses switching off non-essential electric lights, for one hour from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., usually on the last Saturday of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
