Please keep your batteries out of the bins and landfill. Woolworths and Aldi have collection bins.
It only takes one battery to spark a fire. Batteries continue to spark fires in waste collection truck and facilities locally and nationally. Power tool batteries have been highlighted as a specific concern in household waste and recycling streams.
When batteries are incorrectly disposed of in household bins they get compressed in waste collection trucks and at the processing facilities, which can lead to fires, and puts lives and infrastructure at risk.
All batteries and items containing batteries need to be disposed of safely. There are more than 50 locations around Canberra where selected batteries can be dropped off for free, including the hazardous waste area at the Mugga Lane and Mitchell Resource Management Centres.
