Humanity activity is straining available surface water and groundwater supplies, contributing to droughts, dust storms, and other environmental problems that are detrimental to nature and humanity. Further, some water experts say that by reducing water use by 50 litres per person per day, we could delay or avoid the need for new water provision infrastructure such as dams or desalination plants, and their associated significant environmental impacts.
A couple of simple actions can reduce your water consumption and save you money:
- While waiting for the shower water to warm up, save the cold water in a bucket and use it for the garden, pot plants, laundry soaking, washing your hands or even flushing the toilet. You can also scoop used water out of the bath and onto the garden.
- In the kitchen, water can be collected in your water filter jug and kettle while you wait for it to warm up. You can also save water in your sink for rinsing and soaking dishes, cutlery, and cookware before it goes into the dishwasher.
Both these actions add up to significant savings over time.
You can start realising the environmental and cost benefits of saving water from today.
Another win-win that starts in the home.
Note, if you live with babies or toddlers, empty your buckets immediately for safety reasons.
