On Friday 22 May, 45 Merici Drama students from Years 9 and 10 took to the Playhouse stage at the Canberra Theatre as part of Act Up 2026.
Two self-devised performances examined the global impact of fast fashion.
The Year 9 Drama students performed A Tsunami of Clothes: The Tide is Rising and It’s Made of Us, while a combined Year 9 and 10 Drama group presented Threads of Renewal: A Future We Can Mend.
The performance skillfully delivered a powerful, factual message: Australians are the world’s largest fashion consumers and are driving a textile waste crisis.
- More than 200,000 tonnes of clothing end up in landfill each year, the equivalent weight of almost four Sydney Harbour Bridges.
We can all choose to buy less, re-use what we have already or support local op shops.
