Meric College Green Tip #19 - TerraCycle Pen Recycling

TerraCycle, one of the fastest growing green companies in the world and has found a way to recycle, up-cycle, re-use, or otherwise transform many items that can't go into mainstream recycling and therefore end up in landfill.

As the term and year draw to a close, may I remind you that there is a Terracyle pen recycling box in the iC near the photocopier.

TerraCycle, one of the fastest growing green companies in the world and has found a way to recycle, up-cycle, re-use, or otherwise transform many items that can't go into mainstream recycling and therefore end up in landfill.

TerraCycle has created a zero waste solution for pens, pencils and markers. Use this box to recycle pens and pen caps, mechanical pencils, markers and marker caps, permanent markers, and permanent marker caps.

Most pens are made of plastic that will not biodegrade in landfills. In incinerators, plastic items give off toxic gases like dioxins. And even though pens are small, they can add up fast when you figure that billions of them are manufactured every single year. The same is true of other writing utensils like mechanic pencils and markers. They are also made of plastic and add to the items occupying space in our landfills.

So in addition to only buying the pens you need and choosing pens which you can refill, please put all used pens in the Terracycle box in the library to support our campus' commitment to improving our sustainability.

Every item that we divert from landfill reduces the College's waste disposal costs and our environmental impact.
