Lenten Reflection

I pray that your Lenten journey may be a spiritual one.

The penitential season of Lent is the period of forty days (excluding Sundays) beginning on Ash Wednesday. It is a season of the Church year that observes the forty days Jesus fasted and prayed in the wilderness before He began His public ministry of preaching for repentance. For me, the beginning of each Lenten season conjures up memories of giving up lollies, going to the Stations of the Cross and eating fish and chips every Friday night. The three traditional ways to prepare for Easter are through Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. There are many ways that we can achieve this. Maybe you could try some of the following:

  • Have a bowl of rice for dinner!! And give the money you would normally spend on a family meal to Project Compassion.
  • Think of someone that you have been unkind to. Then make an effort to say or do something nice for that person.
  • Just as Jesus spent time in solitude, try and spend 5 minutes alone in prayer and meditation each day.
  • Read the three readings for Sunday's Mass, especially if you cannot take part in the liturgy this Sunday.
  • When you hear someone being criticised, put in a good word for this person.
  • Pray for a peaceful future for all people everywhere.
  • As a family make a list of 3 things you should be thankful for and put it on the fridge, try to add to the list each day during Lent.
  • Donate $1 to Project Compassion for every light bulb in your house.

I pray that your Lenten journey may be a spiritual one. Where we think about the changes we can make in our lives, to be God’s love and mercy in our world, ensuring all people have a just future.
