What & How?
Merici has partnered with WV Technologies to begin a community e-waste recycling program on campus. The e-waste collection cage is outside the IT staffroom towards the Wise Street staff carpark. Merici staff, students and parents can drop off:
- Laptops
- Desktops
- Mobile phones
- Screens
Please note the program doesn’t include appliances (like toasters) or consumer electronics (like DVD players). Keep your drop-offs limited to the list above please!
Why?
- E-waste is a rapidly worsening environmental issue. Globally, we produce about 50 million tonnes of e-waste per year. Many resources used to make electronics like phones and computers are both finite and re-usable (for example, copper and gold). Recycling e-waste is therefore a no-brainer!
- WV Technologies is a Social Enterprise, which means they give disadvantaged people the opportunity to return to work.
- Merici will be reimbursed for E-waste that’s still in good nick – we’ll use this to fund sustainability projects at the College.
- WV Tech also conducts full data sanitisation to Department of Defence levels (this means you only need to wipe your computer/phone memory if you really want to).
