The Year in Mathematics

The start of 2020 saw Year 9 Mathematics move to MYP and the first cohort in Year 11 of International Baccalaureate Diploma Program study.

THE YEAR IN MATHEMATICS

Throughout this year, students across Year 7-12 have shown resilience and creative ways to engage in Mathematics, both online and in the classroom.

We have welcomed to the Department Mr. Damien Nemeth and Miss Emma Bishop at the start of the year and Mr. Ed Mickleburgh and Mr. Damien Woods in Semester 2. All come with a wealth of experience and a passion for teaching and learning.

The start of 2020 saw Year 9 Mathematics move to MYP and the first cohort in Year 11 of International Baccalaureate Diploma Program study. Our staff have worked hard to ensure these new courses are both engaging and maintain high standards for all students.

Year 8 saw the embedding of a Mathematical Mindset program in the curriculum. This was in response to feedback we received about student’s belief in themselves and how they viewed Mathematicians. Using the work of Standford University’s Jo Boaler, students have been exploring the idea that the messages we tell ourselves underpins our ability to achieve in the classroom. It is hoped that this program will be rolled out to Year 7-10 in the future.

In March, the whole school got involved in Pi Day activities, through a whole school relay competition. Students worked as a team to solve real life problems as fast as they could. Students enjoyed competing against their friends, other classes and other year groups.

We have continued a strong Enrichment program throughout they year which has included AST practice, Mathematics tutoring and ongoing enrichment groups. 39 students registered for the Mathematics Challenge (Term 1), The computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition (Term 2) and the Australian Mathematics Competition (Term 3), with many students achieving a Credit or above. As a new enrichment activity, this year some of our senior student were invited to help in junior Maths classes, as a form of service. This proved to be rewarding for all involved. A special thank you to the time our staff give up to run our enrichment programs including Mathematical Mental Computation (Mrs. Ryan and Miss Bishop), morning and afternoon tutoring sessions (Mrs. de Puit, Mr. Ryan, Miss Bishop and Mr. Maier), and the Friday Afternoon problem solving group (Mr. Mickleburgh).

Our staff worked tirelessly through the remote learning in Term 1 and 2 and throughout the year.  We are grateful for the time and effort they put into supporting students understanding and growth throughout the year.
