Sports Awards 2019

2019 was another busy year for Merici College Sport. We had many teams compete at North High School and ACT School Sport events in sports such as athletics, swimming, cross country, soccer, AFL, cricket, hockey, netball, volleyball, touch football, soccer, ultimate frisbee, softball, golf, snow and oztag.

As well as these one-day events, Merici entered teams in volleyball, netball, sailing, rowing, softball, basketball and snow sports as co-curricular weekend activities.

Student Achievement - Eleanor Coleman awarded the Audrey Fagan Young Women's Grant

Congratulations to Merici College Eleanor Coleman, Year 11 who was awarded the Audrey Fagan's Enrichment Grant, presented to her by the ACT Minister for Women Yvette Berry. The Audrey Fagan Young Women’s Enrichment Grants highlight the ACT Government’s commitment to the development of opportunities for young women. This supports the Government’s efforts in creating a community where women are safe, healthy, equally represented, and valued for their contribution to society.

ACT Science and Engineering Fair Award recipients

At the ACT Science Fair Awards night on Friday, Rebecca Fergusson and Caitlyn Crick both received awards.  Rebecca achieved an Encouragement Award for her investigation into the antibacterial effect of various natural remedies, while Caitlyn received a Highly Commended Award for her study of the strength-to-weight ratio of various beam geometries printed on a 3D printer.  Caitlyn will go on to enter her project in the National BHP Science and Engineering Awards."

Year 9/10 Engineering Students 3rd Place at Science and Engineering Challenge

Last Thursday 24 October, the two Year 9/10 engineering classes competed against six other Canberra schools in the Science and Engineering Challenge, run by the University of Newcastle at Parliament House. The students divided into eight smaller teams and completed a variety of challenges through the day. With several high scores and a lot of enthusiasm and creativity, they came away with overall third place. We're looking forward to participating in this excellent challenge again in the future!

Student Achievement - Jorga Jongeneel's role investing the Governor General as Chief Scout of Australia

During the holidays, Jorja Jongeneel (Year 7) had the privilege of being selected as one of a small group of Scouts who invested the Governor General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), as Chief Scout of Australia. The ceremony was held at Government House on 2 October and Jorja had the honour of presenting the Governor General with his name badge. This event is also special as it only happens around every 5 years when Australia has a new Governor General. #mericipride

Year 12 Dance Students' Achievements

Merici College congratulates Year 12 Dance students Eliza Cooke and Rachel Baker on their recent achievements. Eliza has been successful in receiving an offer from one of Sydney's most elite boutique full-time Dance School, Ettingshausen. Rachel will be undertaking a two year intensive Dance program at Ev and Bow in Sydney. All the best wishes girls!
