Merici College Vinnies Sleepout

Canberra’s cold temperatures did not favour Merici College Year 10, 11 and 12 students and teachers who rose to the challenge on Thursday 28 June for the annual Student Vinnies Sleepout.

The group slept outdoors in the New Quad to raise funds for Canberra’s homeless with the aim of promoting awareness within our Merici community of the issue of homelessness and for the students to experience a small part of the reality of homelessness.

World of Maths @ Merici

Numeracy is a compulsory component of our curriculum, and to make numeracy fun and relevant to our students, today the World of Maths roadshow visited our school. This was an ideal opportunity for students to see how maths is applied to some real life situations. More importantly, students were engaged in hands-on activities that catered for all ability levels and probed their problem solving skills. The students found World of Maths highly engaging and demonstrated that Maths can be fun!

Seiwa House Day

Seiwa House celebrated their inaugural ‘House Day’ on Monday 25 June. This was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge, observe and explore the Order of the Good Samaritan Nuns on which Seiwa House is founded. Students gathered together in the PC lesson Period 4 for a special assembly to reflect on the history of Seiwa House, followed by a celebration cake in the Indigenous Garden. Seiwa students also wore blue accessories on the day.

ANU Maths Day

On Friday May 25th, a team of five of our top senior mathematicians (Lauren Paterson, Bronte Alexander, Ravneet Dillon, Nicole Clough and Rosemary Zielinski) took part in the annual ANU Maths Day among more than 30 other College teams from Canberra and the region.

The Carbon Challenge!

The ACTSmart Carbon Challenge is just around the corner.

For the month of July, participants compete in a variety of challenges to reduce their carbon emissions.

You can register for the Challenge at https://www.actsmart.act.gov.au/resources/carbon-challenge and sign up to the Merici team by following the “Teams” link.

The schools with the most sign ups and the highest level of avoided emissions, wins some awesome prizes.

Merici CanLine helps community!

Thank you to all our students who contributed to our CanLine this morning in support of the Vinnies Winter Appeal and OzHarvest and the wonderful work they do for the vulnerable in our local community . We received over 3,400 cans!

Real Talk 'Love and Life' Seminar for Parents and Carers

We would like to thank Paul Ninnes from Real Talk for his ‘Love and Life: Getting Real on the Tough Topics’ presentation to our parents and carers last night. Some of the topics that Paul covered included:
• What we are up against: the stats
• Current trends in teenage sexual behaviours
• What the Catholic Church teaches about sex and the role of parents
• The Language of the Body –
• The deep significance of sex (psychologically, emotionally, spiritually and physically)

Our thanks are also extended to our community for attending the seminar.

Renewing Connections with our Alumni

On Saturday 2 June, the College community welcomed over 80 ex-students to an Alumni Soiree. School tours were conducted which presented ex-students with an opportunity to see first-hand how the College has changed since their graduation. As they walked down the school corridors, the ex-students reminisced about their classrooms, their teachers and their friends. All had one thing in common, they were all proud Merici students who have contributed to the growth of the College and its history.
