A Message from the Director - Jennifer Wright
In Week 3 of this term, the Year 10 Engineering class performed their first rocket launch as part of this semester’s unit: “It Is Rocket Science.” With the assistance of members of the Canberra Rocketry Group (Nev Blyth, Dr Tony Buckmaster, John Davies and Mark Bottomley) and kind permission from Dr Buckmaster to use his Yass property, the engineers launched 14 model rockets. Each rocket carried a payload of a small altimeter that allowed us to collect flight telemetry.

Thank you to all the students and staff who supported Book Week last week. All week the library has been a hive of activity with scavenger hunts, book quizzes, celebrity heads and of course our very positive Book Week Parade on Wednesday. It was a huge success with great characterisation and costumes, and lots of fun had by all. Congratulations to all winners; the photo above is of the most creative group: Alice in Wonderland from Year 8.

Penola House Day was a wonderful celebration of the House and we were privileged to have two local Josephite Sisters come in to share it with us, Sr Bernadette Mary Walsh and Sr Ann Morrison. The Sisters shared great stories from their childhood and the many and varied experiences they have had working throughout NSW. Sr Bernadette Mary even brought photos in and most featured her “mucking in” doing all sorts of jobs such as mowing lawns and fixing a roof while up in a cherry picker. The celebrations featured a prayerful liturgy, games and of course, the Penola cake.
Merici College ex-student Caitlin Figueiredo addressed the school community at the Academic Awards Ceremony on Monday 6 August. Caitilin is a proud multicultural Australian, social entrepreneur, activist, and Merici Alumni. She sits on three United Nations Task Forces with her work spanning five continents. At 20 years old, Caitlin was named one of Australia's 100 Most Influential Women and an Obama White House Changemaker for Gender Equality by the President and Michelle Obama.
