Merici College Green Tip #19 - Talking about cups

Disposable cups are making their way to Merici.

It is estimated Australians use 1 billion disposable coffee cups each year.

An estimated up to 90 per cent of all disposable cups ended up in landfill, equating to around 60,000 kilograms of plastic waste per annum.

Here at Merici we are committed to sustainability promoting action.

Please support the reduction of waste and plastics in our environment by:

Merici College awarded ACT Environmental Grant for Biodiversity Restoration Project

Wonderful news has been received acknowledging the work for sustainability and the environment that is ongoing at Merici!

The ACT Environmental Grants Program which helps to strengthen community participation and engagement in environmental projects through community led initiatives, has awarded Merici College’s Biodiversity Restoration Project a grant of $23,800. The grant will expand the existing project which is aimed at rewilding a section of the oval along Wise Street with species from the Yellow Box-Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland, one of Canberra's key ecosystems.

Merici College Green Tip # 14 - Your Carbon Footprint

What is your carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that come from the production, use and end-of-life of a product or service.

It includes carbon dioxide — the gas most commonly emitted by humans — and others, including methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases, which trap heat in the atmosphere, causing global warming.

Usually, the bulk of an individual’s carbon footprint will come from transportation, housing, and food.

Merici College Green Tip #13 - Your old sponge

Kitchen sponges accumulate bacteria, debris and other particles, and become smelly.

However, it is not always necessary to throw them out to landfill straight away.

You can save money and reduce waste by extending the life of your household sponges...

...by cleaning them!

Put them in the dishwasher, washing machine or in boiling water with a splash of vinegar.

Once cooled, wring them out and air dry them.

I have been doing this for years, and also put my kitchen scrub brushes in the dishwasher when they need cleaning.

Happy Cleaning!
