Merici College Green Tip #35 - Rewilding at Merici College

The sun came out on a winter's day in August for 20 students from the Sustainability at Merici (SAM) student group who gathered to do some rewilding with local species from the Yellow Box- Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland, one of Canberra's key ecosystems.

Thanks to Merici's maintenance staff who prepared the area everything was ready for a great planting session.

Work began as the girls spent their lunch hour planting to provide habitat for small native birds and butterflies.

Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary Mass

On Monday 15 August  we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. ‘See the beauty of the daughter of Jerusalem who ascended to heaven like the rising sun at dawn.’ (Benedictus antiphone from Daily Office).

It was a very special morning at Merici. This was our very first Mass celebrated in our newly renovated Chapel.

St Vinnies Oodie/Hoodie/PJs Day

Unfortunately due to CE COVID protocols, Merici College staff and students were unable to participate in the St Vinnies Sleepout to raise money and awareness for the homeless in our community. Instead, the students and staff held a Hoodies/Oodies/PJs Day on Thursday 4 August. We were overwhelmed with the high level of participation and over $2,000 was raised on the day.

Thanks everyone! #mericipride

2022 Can Line

For the last five weeks, the students at Merici College have been collecting cans of food for the most vulnerable in our community. TcSt Vinnies and OzHarvest were overwhelmed by the thousands of cans donated. As a result, many families in our wider community will be comforted by the contributions from Merici College.

Congratulations everyone for an outstanding effort and special congratulations to Balgo House for collecting the most cans and winning House points.

Biodiversity Restoration Project has started at Merici!

A Biodiversity Restoration project has commenced at Merici College which will have short-term and long-term stages.  Given the decline in Australian wildlife and biodiversity and Australia having the highest rate of species extinction in the world, largely due to land clearing and use of synthetic chemicals, it is important for Merici to make our contribution to the solution.  Merici can provide an important travel link and food source for wildlife between Black Mountain and Mount Ainslie.

2022 Drama Production, The Burial at Thebes

Congratulations to our Antigone cast and crew who worked long and hard to ensure that the performance drew our audience to the team’s dystopian interpretation of this traditional Greek play. Our talented students, along with students from Marist Radford, Burgmann and Erindale Colleges, continue to demonstrate the very high standards we have come to expect of Merici College.

Merici College Green Tip #24 - International Day of World's Indigenous People

The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of the World's Indigenous People is observed on August 9 each year to promote and protect the rights of the world’s Indigenous population.

Around 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity is located where indigenous people live.

Studies have shown that fauna, flora and biodiversity flourish where indigenous people reside.

Processes for climate action and a sustainable future must be inclusive of indigenous knowledge

and environmental management skills and practices.
