Meric College Green Tip #19 - TerraCycle Pen Recycling

As the term and year draw to a close, may I remind you that there is a Terracyle pen recycling box in the iC near the photocopier.

TerraCycle, one of the fastest growing green companies in the world and has found a way to recycle, up-cycle, re-use, or otherwise transform many items that can't go into mainstream recycling and therefore end up in landfill.

TerraCycle has created a zero waste solution for pens, pencils and markers. Use this box to recycle pens and pen caps, mechanical pencils, markers and marker caps, permanent markers, and permanent marker caps.

CASE Space School at NASA!

CASE Space School at NASA is currently providing 27 girls from Canberra with an unforgettable STEM experience as 293 students from 44 girls’ schools across the country are enjoying their Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia trip, in partnership with Actura.

Christmas Hampers for St Vinnies

Our Year 9 Religious Education students were kept very busy yesterday packing their ‘mini-hampers’ or Christmas gifts for the St Vincent de Paul Christmas appeal. With so many students with gifts, cellophane and sticky tape, the atmosphere was very festival, sometimes semi-organised chaos but they all had lots of fun! Instead of donating individual items the students voted to form small groups and make ‘mini hampers’. The gifts are around under the Christmas tree all the students have done a great job!

Years 7-10 Advent Mass

Our community celebrated Advent on Thursday 6 December with a very special Mass. We were very honoured to welcome our Celebrant, Fr Bernie Patterson from St Brigid and St Patrick parishes in Braddon and Dickson, and Sr Genny Ryan, one of our Ursuline Sisters whose Order is instrumental to the foundation of Merici and who continue to inspire us today.

Green Tip #18 - Ekodeck Plus

Welcome to this week’s sustainability news......

The new benches in the quadrangle have been completed and they look fabulous!

Even more exciting is that fact that it is made from Ekodeck Plus, a timber substitute which is a composite of reclaimed timber and bamboo and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE).

You may also be interested to learn that in addition to decking made up of Ekodeck Plus, the natural timber trim is reclaimed timber from the spectator seats of the indoor pool at the AIS, which was completed stripped out. A great example of re-purposing.

Year 10 Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to our Year 10 students who celebrated their academic achievements and the end of Year 10 on Thursday 6 December at a special ceremony. As our Year 10 students prepare to embark on their next stage of their educational journey, the College would like to thank them, recognising their sucesses, both academically and more broadly, their contributions to many aspects of the life and community of Merici College.

We would also like to congratulate the following students who received scholarships and special awards:
