The Year in Health and Physical Education

We thank everyone for another great year of HPE and are very pleased to see many events back up and running and the fantastic achievements and Merici pride throughout.

Health and Physical Education (HPE) in 2022 has brought many challenges with the everchanging and evolving COVID-19 restrictions, but we have been delighted to welcome several new staff members to the Department.

This year, students have engaged in high quality learning experiences to develop all areas of their health and wellbeing. Through the IB, HPE at Merici empowers students to understand and appreciate the value of being physically active and develop the motivation to make healthy life choices. Students have been provided with opportunities to participate in a range of different sports and health units to foster their development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to a balanced and healthy lifestyle now and in the future.

We were fortunate to be able to hold our Athletics Carnival during Term 2 which was a huge success both in the competitive races and field events with an enormous display of House spirit. Our Swimming Carnival looked slightly different this year being held in Term 4 and at a new location at Civic Pool. It was great to see the students getting involved in all this day had to offer between novelty events, swimming races and chanting their team across the finish line.

Despite the challenges experienced around staffing this year, Merici was able to participate in some interschool sport gala days. We achieved excellent results across Northside and ACT finals in different sports.

We thank everyone for another great year of HPE and are very pleased to see many events back up and running and the fantastic achievements and Merici pride throughout.

Merici College HPE Highlights

Year 7 Lunchtime Sport and Inter-House Multisport Competition

Year 7 students were welcomed to the college and the wonderful world of HPE at Merici through some fun lunchtime sport activities and inter-house multisport competitions. This was a wonderful opportunity for the Year 7s to make connections with others, develop House spirit and show their competitiveness.

Congratulations to Balgo House for being crowned the Year 7 Multisport Champions for 2022!

P.A.R.T.Y Program

Year 10 students participated in the P.A.R.T.Y Program run by the Canberra Health Services. The program aims to Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth and offered students a range of educational sessions to assist them in identifying risks and making better and safer choices. During the day, students were provided with information about trauma, learnt about First Aid and CPR, and listened to real life survivors talk about their tragic accidents. The program was a great opportunity for our Year 10s to learn how to recognise potential injury-producing situations, make prevention-oriented choices, and adopt behaviours that minimise unnecessary risk to themselves and others.

PE Survivor

PE Survivor was a big hit across all year groups this year. Students in Years 7 – 10 competed in a variety of activities that tested their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to overcome a series of challenges. Winning these challenges came with rewards and immunities to earn points and top the leaderboard. Students participated exceptionally well and displayed great levels of teamwork, cooperation, and leadership.

Gala Days

We were fortunate to participate in a variety of gala days throughout the year with many students and teams achieving outstanding results.

Athletics Carnival

We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day for the 2022 Athletics Carnival held at the AIS track. Students filled the venue with their bright, colourful and outrageous costumes showing high levels of participation across a range of races and field events. The level of participation and House spirit were high and reflected the special community we have here at Merici College. Congratulations to all students for their outstanding efforts and thank you to all the parents, students, and staff for making the carnival a success.

Swimming Carnival

We would like to thank and congratulations to all students for their participation at our Swimming Carnival and a huge thank you to parents, students, and staff for all their help in making this a successful and enjoyable day.
