World Down Syndrome Day celebrated at Merici College

Annie Lee represented Merici and the ACT Down Syndrome at a morning tea and a reception at Government House with Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove.

World Down Syndrome Day was in established in 2012 when the United Nations General Assembly decided that it would be celebrated on 21 March each year. Lots of Socks is a Down Syndrome International campaign aimed at creating conversation and bring awareness of Down syndrome on 21 March, World Down Syndrome Day, each year. The idea behind the Lots of Socks initiative is to create conversation about diversity, uniqueness, inclusion and acceptance. The theme this year was “leave no one behind” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFioqxJgMXI.

Yesterday to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, Annie Lee (Year 11 student) and many of the teachers at Merici wore colourful socks. Annie also represented the school and the ACT Down Syndrome Association at a morning tea at Fisher Shops. In the evening she attended a reception at Government House and met the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove.

On behalf of Annie's family, thank you to the wonderful community at Merici for welcoming and including Annie and others with Down Syndrome.
