Student Achievement - Year 12 Music Student Shirahni Mudaliar

Shirahni Mudaliar, Expressive Arts Captain

We congratulate Shirahni Mudaliar, Year 12 student and Expressive Arts Captain, on her music achievements with the Canberra Youth Orchestra.

"For the past two years I have been playing with the Canberra Youth Orchestra (CYO) and this year, CYO is celebrating its 50th birthday. Every year we have roughly one concert per term. In the first concert for this year, we played with the Capella group ‘The Idea of North’ as well as the ‘Symphonic dances from west side story’ by Leonard Bernstein and music from ‘How to train your dragon’. The evening was a delight and we had many great reviews. CYO also had another mini concert for ‘Game on!’. At this concert we performed awesome game music such as Pokémon, Mario, Zelda and Bioshock. CYO were very privileged in having the composer from Bioshock come to Australia and listen to our performance. Our most recent concert on the 24th of June, featured Gabi Sultana playing ‘Tirol Concerto for Piano and Orchestra’ by Philip Glass and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony no. 1 in D major. The concert went very well.

This year I chose to challenge myself and apply for the CYO concerto competition 2017. Along with four other members of CYO, we performed the first movement of our chosen concerto. Although we were all nervous, everyone gave an amazing performance. I am extremely privileged to have placed highly commended and I can’t wait for the opportunity to perform as a soloist for the Canberra Youth Orchestra on the 26th of August! On this evening, I will be playing Mozart’s ‘Violin Concerto No. 3 movement 1’ along with the strings, French horn and oboe. Chayla Ueckter-Smith, the winner of the Concerto competition, will be playing ‘Concerto for Oboe and Strings’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams. It will be an amazing evening and I am looking forward to celebrating CYO’s 50th birthday!"
