It’s Time to Think about Safety. Get Rail Ready Canberra!
Canberra's Light Rail is fast approaching and it's time to think about safety. In a special event held at Gungahlin College, Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris launched the "Rail Ready" Light Rail Safety Program.
Speaking at the launch Minister Fitzharris said, "The Canberra Light Rail Project is about to meet a major milestone – the electrification of overhead wires and vehicle testing. We are reaching an exciting stage of the light rail project, so it’s very important that people stay safe and are aware of changes around them."
Local school children, community organisations and stakeholders who attended the launch event were the first to see the new Rail Ready safety video which provides tips for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers when in the light rail environment. Students in attendance representing various schools included: Blue Gum Community School, Brindabella Christian College, Burgmann College, Daramalan College, Good Shepherd Primary School, Harisson School, Merici College, Neville Bonner Primary School, Ngunnawal Primary School, Palmerston District Primary School and St Paul John II College.
The students who attended the event, among them young athletes from Gungahlin United Football Club and Netball ACT, would play an important role as ambassadors for light rail safety. They were asked to share with their peers the Rail Ready safety messages and the information about light rail they learned at the event.
In addition to the video, downloadable Rail Ready safety resources are also available. As part of the Rail Ready Safety Program, primary schools are encouraged to book a traffic and road safety presentation by Constable Kenny Koala and/or request a free TrackSAFE Education Pack, including colourful classroom and staff resources.
Emphasizing one of the Rail Ready safety messages, Minister Fitzharris said, "If everyone follows the rules, we all stay safe.”
