Merici College World Day of Social Justice

When we walk in the shoes of another, we empathise with those in need. In doing so we move from focusing on ourselves to look beyond - into the hearts of others.

As a Catholic school and an IB World School, Merici College has a very strong focus on social justice. Our “Walking in the Shoes of the Other” art installation is an attempt to raise the awareness of the marginalized in our community. It coincides with World Social Justice Day. When we walk in the shoes of another, we empathise with those in need. In doing so we move from focusing on ourselves to look beyond - into the hearts of others.

Young people are longing for meaning, for purpose and to explore their actions and their civic identity. In a world where materialism and consumerism are persistent distractions, the staff and students at Merici College are encouraged to develop a worldview that gives their lives a sense of purpose.

Service Learning provides students with an increased awareness of justice in the world and encourages them to actively seek to transform it. By asking our students to engage in a service-learning program we are striving to break down barriers of fear and prejudice, reduce the impact of stereotypical images and bring a human face to those in our community who have been forgotten. Merici College’s Service-Learning Program provides the opportunity for our girls to undertake challenges that develop new skills, work collaboratively with others, develop international-mindedness through global engagement and intercultural understanding and to put faith into action in our local and global community.
