Merici College Chinese New Year Celebration (Merici女(nǚ)子(zǐ)高(gāo)中(zhōng)春(chūn)节(jié)庆(qìng)祝(zhù)活(huó)动(d))

Welcome to 2019 and a very happy year of the Pig. Chinese New Year falls on 5 February 2019 and Chinese communities around the world celebrate this very important festival with their families and friends.

Merici College is going to celebrate this important festival through three activities:

  1. Wear Something Red (Wednesday, 13 February 2019) - Red is closely associated with Chinese culture and this colour is even more important during Chinese New Year. The use of red decorations during this festival is related to a Chinese myth where red was used to scare off a monster that terrorised villagers in ancient times. To usher in our Chinese New Year celebration, students and staff are encouraged to wear something red. It could be a red ribbon, a pair of red socks, a red hairband, a pair of red studs, etc.
  2. Symbolic Food in the Canteen (1 1February - 14 February 2019) - Our school canteen is going to serve a couple of symbolic dishes, such as spring rolls and dumplings, which Chinese people eat during Chinese New Year. These dishes are eaten as they represent prosperity and good luck.
  3. Food and Information Sharing at lunch time (Friday, 15 February 2019) - We have welcomed three Chinese exchange students and one Chinese teacher from Tieyi School, our sister school in Xi’an (home of the Terra-Cotta Warriors) on Monday, 4 February 2019. We have invited these visitors to share with us how they celebrate Chinese New Year at home. Any student who is interested could join us at lunch time to learn more about how Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year. During this session, we are going to share some delicious snacks as Chinese celebrations always involve good food.
