In 2017, 94% of the young women who completed Year 12 at Merici College in 2016 will continue in some form of recognised education and training in the year after they have left school, 2017, or after they have taken a Gap year.

Approximately 64% will go directly into further study at university (combination of university, CIT/TAFE or a private provider for traineeship), while 32% have decided to take a GAP year. This is quite a large increase from last year, which was 18% deciding to take a Gap year. In most cases the students are working to fund their travel overseas. 94.5% of students undertaking a Gap year will enter into further study in 2018.

4% have moved into full time employment or are still looking for work in the Public Service.

The majority of students who have begun further study, or who intend to begin further study in 2018, have chosen to study in the ACT.

21% of students are studying at Australian National University, which is up by 1% in the previous year. 11% of students are studying at Australian Catholic University, which is down by 7% from the previous year. This could have been due to the changes made to conditional offers for Education this year.

There has been an increase of 13% of our students attending the University of Canberra this year. Approximately 51% of our graduating students will study at the University of Canberra.

Merici College has 4 students enrolled at the University of Sydney and the University of NSW. The ‘Other Universities’ category has students enrolled at the University of Wollongong, Griffith University and the University of Technology, Sydney.

The ‘Other Private’ category includes students studying at JMC Academy, Canberra Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Billie Blue School of Design, Sydney.

6% of our students have enrolled in courses such as, Photography & Design, Community Services and Veterinary Nursing at the Canberra Institute of Technology.

Approximately 21% of students studying at a tertiary institution are completing a business related degree, which includes Commerce, Economics, Politics, International Relations, International Business, Business Administration and Marketing. Quite a number of students have chosen to undertake a double degree in these areas.

17% of students studying Science have enrolled in a broad range of degrees, including Biomedical Science, Psychology and Forensic Science. Again, quite a number have chosen to combine Science with another degree.

Students choosing to studying either Primary or Secondary Education was down from last year by 7% with only 7% of our students choosing to study Education.

Students choosing to study Nursing as a singular degree, or combining with Paramedicine increased to 11% this year, up by 2%.

The Media and Design area of study proved to be quite popular with 6% and 7% choosing these courses.

The students choosing to study the Bachelor of Arts have usually combined with another degree.

Other areas not included in the graph are Child Care, Acting, Hospitality and Hairdressing.
