It gives me great pleasure to welcome you and daughter to the Merici College Community. Please find below some information about the beginning of the school year for your daughter and we hope it will answer some questions you may have about her first week at Merici. Further information will be supplied on her first day.
When does school start for Year 7 in 2018?
School starts for Year 7 on Monday 5 February 2018 and arrival time on that day is at 8.30am. School finishes at 3.07pm.
What is the procedure for the beginning of the first day?
At 8.30am staff will meet you for registration outside the main entrance to the school in Wise Street. Girls will need to find their House table, sign in and will be given name tags. At 8.40am there will be a short welcoming assembly in the Catherine Rey Learning Centre which parents are welcome to attend (approximately 15 minutes).
What equipment should your daughter bring on the first day?
Her Laptop and a pen and one note pad or exercise book. Each subject teacher will inform your daughter about subject specific stationery requirements.
Merici School Uniform
The Summer uniform is compulsory for all students in Years 7 – 12. Please follow the link https://www.merici.act.edu.au/node/45 to find our uniform requirements.
For Workplace Health and Safety reasons, school shoes must be lace up polishable black leather, cover the whole foot and have a sole with a minimum thickness at the front of 1 cm and at the back have a heel height no higher than 4 cm. No Mary-Jane styles, trendy skate wear, canvass thin soled shoes, or shoes with buckles are acceptable at any time. A photograph of the acceptable style is available on our website. As in previous years, Merici College participates in the Athlete’s Foot Canberra School Rewards Program. The Athletes Foot will donate $5 from every shoe sold when Merici is mentioned.
The book pack includes all of the requirements for Year 7 students apart from the stationery needed in individual classes. The bag contains a school approved calculator, geometry set, a specific languages work book, Maths Grid Book, Merici Folder, PE hat and other items for school. The pack is compulsory for all students and cannot be changed in any way. The bag can be used to carry the PE uniform.
The payment of $90.00 will be charged on your Term 1 fees.
Your daughter will be given her pack on the first day of Year 7 2018.
What about food on the first day?
Please bring food and drink for recess or food may be purchased from the canteen.
Lunch is provided for Year 7 on the first day.
What about a locker?
Each student will be supplied with a combination padlock, which will remain the property of the College.
What about bus/going home arrangements?
For the first week, Year 7 students are taken by their Period 5 teachers to the Catherine Rey Learning Centre at 2.40pm, grouped in bus groups and taken to the buses. It is helpful if students know their bus number (information available from the ACTION website and from QCity and Transborder in mid-January). They are all required to do this, even if you are picking them up on the first day, so that they become familiar with their bus. Students should be picked up by parents in the designated pick-up/drop-area in the car park adjacent to the oval. They will be waiting with a supervising teacher under the shade structure beside the car park from 3.07pm.
It is recommended you discuss a plan B for getting your daughter home should she miss the bus after the first week.
