Colleges United in Hope for St Vinnies Winter Appeal

The theme of the night encouraged students to find an outfit from a second-hand clothing store (such as St Vincent de Paul’s, the Salvation Army, etc) and wear it to the event.

On Thursday 27 July, Merici College hosted the 'Vinnies Night Out – Reduce, Reuse, Restyle' event which was a concert-style fundraising event for the Vinnies Winter Appeal. The event included a line-up of some of Canberra’s best up-and-coming talent including:

  • DJs Toucan Music and Bangers and Mash;
  • Bands Jacob Jones Keogh and Salad Buoys; and
  • Bom Funk Dance Studio,

A sausage sizzle, raffles and a dress-up competition were also part of the evening’s activities. Catholic schools with students from Years 10-12 came along and supported this event. These schools included St Mary MacKillop College, Marist College, St Francis Xavier College, St Clare’s College, St Edmunds College, St John Paul College and Daramalan College.

The theme of the night encouraged students to find an outfit from a second-hand clothing store (such as St Vincent de Paul’s, the Salvation Army, etc) and wear it to the event. Tayla Papasidero, Merici SRC Captain noted that this raised awareness and funds for these charitable organisations and educated students about the reality of a Canberra winter as it is for many less fortunate people. “It was great to see so many of our friends from other Colleges supporting this event. Most important was that we all recognised that so many people in our community need our support and help, especially in the cold winter months”.

The event was very successful with a total of $2,336.00 raised on the night. All proceeds have been donated to St Vincent de Paul. We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to all the bands, DJs and dancers that provided entertainment, to our fellow students from other Colleges who came along and supported this event and to the Merici Vinnies Committee who organised the event and ensured that the night ran smoothly. Thanks also to Merici staff who supervised students on the night. We would also like to take the opportunity of thanking the ACT businesses who donated goods and services to be used as prizes.  The evening was great fun for all involved and raised much needed funds for a worthy cause. We are looking forward to hosting this event again in the years to come.
