Merici College Green Tip #8 - Have you got leftovers?

What do you do when you have leftover food?

According to foodbank.org.au:

In Australia, 7.6 million tonnes of food is wasted every year.

While 70% of this food is still perfectly edible, 1 in 6 Australian adults haven’t had enough to eat in the last year.

On top of this, 1.2 million children have gone hungry during the same period.

So what should you do with leftover food?

Gift of Life Walk 2023

Sincere thanks to all our community for supporting our Gift of Life Walk this morning. We would like to extend our thanks to Josh and Ned and the Canberra FM crew for broadcasting live from Merici this morning and helping us raise awareness about organ and tissue donation. Special thanks to Cath Scott and all the staff at Gift of Life Inc. for their involvement and support. We would also like to thank Clem and Liam O'Donnell for sharing their story this morning.

Don't forget everyone, register to become a donor! www.giftoflife.asn.au

Close the Gap 2023

Today is Close the Gap Day, a time for us to reflect on the progress that has been made in healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the work that still needs to be done.

What part can you play in closing the gap?

1. Know what the gap is and why it matters!
2. Listen to the stories of First Nations peoples who have experienced the gap.
3. Pledge to educate yourself more about the issues.
4. Tell the community about the gap and what we can do to support change.

Merici College Green Tip #5 - World Wildlife Day March 3rd

March 3 is World Wildlife Day.

This United Nations International day celebrates the world's wild animals and plants and the contribution that they make to our lives as well as to the health of the planet.

Our biodiversity restoration project here at Merici supports World Wildlife Day by restoring habitat and food sources for wildlife.

Student Exchange Experience - Harriette Maguire

Back in 2018, I visited Italy with my family which was such a memorable experience, so I decided to start learning the language when I came to Merici in Year 7. When the WEP overseas exchange experience came up, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to go back to Italy and be able to use all the language skills that Merici had taught me over the past 4 years. Especially after the pandemic, I was so excited to travel and be able to see new places again. I went into it trying not to set any expectations, which prompted me to have an open mind.

Counsellor's Corner - Settling into School

It’s been a busy start to the school year and we hope that all students are starting to settle in to their new routines and schedules. As we begin to embark on our academic journey together, we thought that it would be a good time to remind students and their families of some good study habits to set themselves up well to achieve their goals.

Merici College Green Tip #2 - Our biodiversity restoration project will look like this in 5 years time!

The photo displayed is from the Fowles Street park in Weston which is the inspiration for our project here at Merici.

This was begun only five years ago by Alice Hathorn from ACT Urban Woodland Rescue who is guiding our project.

Valuable ecosystem services have been restored and 12 species of butterfly have returned to the area.

We are looking forward to seeing our hard work translate into the same beautiful outcome!

Counsellors Corner - Welcome to 2023

It is such a joy to listen to the hive of activity and buzz of excitement filling the corridors of Merici College! I feel honoured to part of the Merici school community again this year and am very excited to see what 2023 will bring. One thing that I have learnt throughout 2022, is that Merici college is inclusive, supportive, and kind and I look forward to watching this thrive throughout the year.

I am excited to announce that this year we welcome a new member to our counselling team and the College community, Chelsea Kent.

The Year in Vocational Education Training and Careers

Merici College provides the students with the key skills to move forward! The academic pathways to further education are varied and many of our girls have taken up early offers at university.

The vocational courses that the College offers our students in Year 10, 11 and 12 will certainly provide them with excellent opportunities to facilitate their career pathway and equip them with essential skills for the workplace or for further education.

A snapshot of what happens after Year 12…
