Merici College Green Tip #9 - How To Have a Low or Zero Waste and Ethical Easter

It is possible...

As with all things zero waste, it is best to be prepared to avoid the waste that holidays tend to bring.

Leaving your Easter egg buying to the last minute and rushing to the nearest supermarket will most likely result in buying plastic wrapped, palm oil containing holiday treats for family and friends.

There are options to buy better Easter eggs and other treats instead!

Merici College Green Tip #9 - Zero Waste Revolution - Saturday 30 April

Any further delay in concerted global action will miss a brief and rapidly closing window to secure a "livable future" according to the Panel's co-chair.
In particular, Australia will suffer greater climate impacts than any other advanced economy.

So if you want to take action for your livable future:

The Festival will be held on Saturday 30 April 2022, in the Kambri Precinct of ANU.

The theme of this year's festival is:

One Person, a World of Difference

Merici College Green Tip #8 - Earth Hour 2022

Earth Hour is this coming Saturday, March 26th.

This Earth Hour, Australians are being called upon everywhere to sign up, switch off and join a worldwide community of millions supporting stronger action on climate change.

It’s never been more critical to come together to protect our world than at this moment.

Climate change is impacting our precious environment right now, with the Great Barrier Reef experiencing its fourth significant bleaching event in just six years.

National Close the Gap Day 2022

17 March is the “National Close the Gap Day” in Australia. For more than a decade now, Australians from every corner of the country, in schools, businesses and community groups, have shown their support for Close the Gap by marking National Close the Gap Day on the third Thursday of March each year. This National Close the Gap Day, we have an opportunity to send our governments a clear message that Australians value health equality as a fundamental right for all. Join us in demanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equality within a generation.

Merici College Green Tip #6 - International Women's Day

Today is International Women’s Day.The 2022 theme is:“Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”recognising the contribution of women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the students and staff here at Merici, particularly the SAM's (Sustainability at Merici), as well as the Sustainability Captains, past and present, for their contribution.

Green Tip #5 - It is Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday, March 6th

Sunday, March 6th is Clean Up Australia Day.

Litter is a problem for wildlife and human health, water quality, soil quality, oceans...everything really.

Not only is it unappealing to look at, it can also affect the environment for many years. This is turn affects us.

We have all seen images of wildlife trapped in six-pack plastic rings, or birds and turtles with plastic rings around their neck.

So, cleaning up is important.

You can either join a Clean Up Australia Day event near you or do your own collection of rubbish in your neighbourhood.
