2022 Can Line
Donations for the Can Line are now being accepted!
For those unfamiliar, the Can Line is our annual fundraiser where students are encouraged to bring in as many canned goods as possible over the next few weeks to feed the most vulnerable in our community. On the 15th of August, the donated cans will be lined up on the tennis courts, and the house with the longest line wins! These donations are then given to OzHarvest and St Vincent De Paul, charity-funded organisations who work across Australia to provide food for those in need.
OzHarvest was founded in 2004 to help redirect the huge volume of food going to waste to those going hungry at night and is now Australia’s leading food rescue organisation. As of December 2021, OzHarvest is made up of over 4,000 volunteers, spread across seven regional locations, who donate more than 77,000 hours of their time to pack and deliver food hampers, prepare and pack cooked meals, stock and drive night vans, and provide relief to those in need. As of today, OzHarvest delivers over 1 million meals a month to Australians in need of food relief and support, as well as saving over 9.5 million kilograms of food originally intended for land fill. St Vincent De Paul, or Vinnies, has a Night Patrol service dedicated to providing comfort to the homeless members of the community. Made up of only two vans and a team of volunteers, the patrol operates seven nights a week, 364 nights a year. They spend all night visiting locations across Canberra and Queanbeyan, offering hot drinks, food, blankets and friendship to those sleeping on the streets. Your donations will help support these organisations to ensure one less person goes hungry, so please be generous.
Last year the number of cans received was amazing, but since our student body continues to grow, it would be awesome if we could donate even more this time. Please ensure the cans you bring in are something you would enjoy as a meal.
Incremental tallies will be posted and on the 15th , the winning House will be revealed! You only have a few weeks to help your House win, so next time you’re at the shops, be sure to grab a can or two and start bringing them in!
