Merici College Green Tip #7 - Earth Hour this Saturday!

Merici College Earth Hour 2019

Earth Hour is this coming Saturday, March 28th.

While there will be no community events this year due to the pandemic we can all switch off  non-essential electricity in our homes this Saturday night for one hour.

According to Wikipedia, Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on a specific day towards the end of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet. It was started as a lights-off event in SydneyAustralia, in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns across 187 countries and territories to raise awareness for energy consumption and effects on the environment.

While this event highlights a simple action that can be taken to make a difference, it is important to also reflect on our energy usage behaviours throughout the year to find options for home and work where we can switch off to reduce carbon emissions.

It is also an opportunity to reflect on the vast benefits delivered by electricity and how we can transition to renewables to maintain these benefits without compromising our climate.
