Green Tip #15 E-Waste at Merici

The e-waste collection cage is outside the IT staffroom towards the Wise Street staff carpark.

What & How?

Merici has partnered with WV Technologies to begin a community e-waste recycling program on campus. The e-waste collection cage is outside the IT staffroom towards the Wise Street staff carpark. Merici staff, students and parents can drop off:

  • Laptops
  • Desktops
  • Mobile phones
  • Screens

Please note the program doesn’t include appliances (like toasters) or consumer electronics (like DVD players). Keep your drop-offs limited to the list above please!

Why?

  1. E-waste is a rapidly worsening environmental issue. Globally, we produce about 50 million tonnes of e-waste per year. Many resources used to make electronics like phones and computers are both finite and re-usable (for example, copper and gold). Recycling e-waste is therefore a no-brainer!
  2. WV Technologies is a Social Enterprise, which means they give disadvantaged people the opportunity to return to work.
  3. Merici will be reimbursed for E-waste that’s still in good nick - we’ll use this to fund sustainability projects at the College.
  4. WV Tech also conducts full data sanitisation to Department of Defence levels (this means you only need to wipe your computer/phone memory if you really want to).
